February is a time for kindness and for showing others that we care. While we are always proud of our students’ accomplishments, we are even more proud of the daily choices they make to be safe, be respectful, and be responsible.

Throughout the month of January, students who consistently demonstrated safe, respectful, and responsible behaviors earned the opportunity to compete in classroom Rock, Paper, Scissors tournaments. Classroom champions then advanced to our schoolwide tournament, where we crowned a Kindergarten Champion (Isla Jacoberger), First Grade Champion (Spencer Lansberry), Second Grade Champion (Carson Porreca), Third Grade Champion (Zane Brackbill), and even a Staff Champion.

Those champions then faced off in an exciting final round, with our student champion remaining to challenge our Staff Champion (Mrs. Cox). In the end, Carson Porreca reigned supreme, earning the title of LPC Rock, Paper, Scissors Champion!

Porreca LPC Student

Following the tournament, we spoke with students about sportsmanship and about life—specifically the challenges we all face. We reminded them that success is not just about winning, but about how we handle ourselves in both victory and defeat. Our final message encouraged students to push themselves to get better each and every day, to appreciate the greatness and winning qualities in others, and to do whatever it takes to transform those qualities within themselves.

Each day is an opportunity to improve just a little bit more than the day before. Our motto, “Make today better than yesterday,” is not something we simply say—it is something we strive to live by. Students returned to their classrooms understanding that February should be tougher than January, and March tougher than February, because the goal is always to stretch ourselves to grow.

Looking ahead, students who continue learning to keep their L.E.A.R.N. letters will have the opportunity to participate in a March Madness basketball activity with their classmates next month. We are excited to continue celebrating both the character and growth of our students.

Thank you for your continued partnership in helping our students become the very best versions of themselves.

As we continue to navigate the winter months and the increased illnesses that often come with them, we want to thank you in advance for your partnership and for keeping lines of communication open. Your proactive communication truly helps us ensure the safety, consistency, and care of all students each day.

We kindly ask that when your child will be absent, picked up early, or experiencing a change in transportation, families notify both the classroom teacher and the school office ( lpc_attendance@hempfieldsd.org ). While teachers appreciate knowing when a student will be out, office staff play a critical role in attendance tracking, dismissal procedures, and ensuring students are accounted for throughout the day. During this season, staff members may also be out sick, and messages sent to only one person may not always be received in a timely manner.

To help us best support your child and maintain smooth daily operations, please remember to share the following information with the school office whenever applicable:

  • Absence excuses for any day your child is out
  • Early pick-up notes including the time and reason for dismissal
  • Any changes in transportation (bus, car rider, walker, etc.)
  • Pick-up by someone other than a parent, legal guardian, or listed emergency contact
    • Please include the individual’s full name
    • Remind them to bring a valid photo ID at the time of pick-up

We truly appreciate your cooperation, understanding, and continued communication. Working together helps us keep our students safe, supported, and learning—especially during these challenging winter weeks. Thank you for partnering with us and playing such an important part of our LPC school community.

We look forward to welcoming next year’s kindergarten students to LPC. This Thursday, February 12, we will hold a ‘Pre-school Connections’ opportunity beginning at 12:00. Each opportunity to attend LPC for these connections offers a read aloud in a kindergarten classroom while meeting and doing an activity with one of our special area teachers or staff members. This month, boys and girls attending will get to meet our school counselor, Mr. Kasabo.

We are hopeful that many of our families can bring their future kindergartener to see the school and meet Mr. Kasabo!
