From Dr. Daecher, principal at LIC:

I hope the start to your summer has been wonderful! I look forward to getting to know our rising 4th graders and 4th grade families! If this is you no longer have students at LPC starting in the 2026-2027 school year, I encourage you to unsubscribe from the LPC ENews and subscribe the LIC ENews. Here is the link: https://hempfieldsd.us11.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=be018d3bdf99e3f20471d25f0&id=1d71911e45

Transitions are difficult, especially in the middle of a student's elementary career. However, we have created systems to ease the transition. As 3rd graders, they have visited LIC multiple times for assemblies, dances, and completed a tour in May. I highly encourage you to attend our New Student Family Tours. They are tentatively set for August 12th at 2:30 pm or 6:00 pm & August 13th at 9:00 am. No need to sign-up and we encourage you to bring the whole family if you wish.

Combat the Summer Slide!

Summer is a fun time... however, if your child does not do any academic work over the summer, they are likely to lose quite a bit in their academic progress. After researching and reading on the best strategies to avoid the 'summer slide,' I found four things that are helpful for students in the summer. If students do these four things every day, they will have a great summer and be able to pick up right away on the first day of school.

Do Something for your Brain- I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for students to be automatic with their multiplication facts. Flashcards at home are the best way to accomplish this! Dollar Tree and many website have low-cost choices for this. If your child is automatic with their multiplication facts, there are a lot of great math websites that I have vetted over the years. Reach out to me if you have questions: ian_daecher@hempfieldsd.org.

Do Something for your Mind- Read, read, read! The Lancaster Public Library has this resource for ways to keep reading. See this website for more details. Students should be reading at least 20 minutes every day in the summer.

Do Something for your Body- Students should exercise every day. Summer is the perfect time to get out and ride bikes, swim, or practice a sport.

Do Something for your Family- Have a discussion about a safe, age-appropriate chore your child can do for the family every day.

If students do this every day, they will have a fun and rewarding summer. If it helps, feel free to tell your child that it is Dr. Daecher's homework : )

Did you know that your school is a Title I school? That means we receive extra federal funding — because of the hard work our families and community put in every day — to provide additional learning support for our students. We use these funds to bring Reading Specialists and Coaches into our classrooms to give every child the boost they need to succeed.

We want to hear from you! Please take a few minutes to fill out this survey. The survey should not take more than 10 minutes to complete. This survey will close on Wednesday, June 10.

Your feedback helps us plan better events and find new ways to support your family. Thank you!
